The totality of all animals in an area or – in the narrower sense – all animal species in this area is called fauna or animal world. The associated science is biogeography. If the entire planet Earth is considered, the fauna includes all animal species. In paleontology, for example, one speaks of the “the fauna of the Cretaceous period”.
