The fascinating world of pumpkins

Hey pumpkin fans,

grab a cup of tea and get cosy, because today we're delving into the fascinating world of pumpkins! These wonderful fruits are not only the stars of any autumn decorations, but also true superheroes in the kitchen and garden.

Let's start with a few flattering titles that adorn the pumpkin: It is celebrated as a ‘nutrient-rich autumn messenger’, a ‘vital substance miracle’ and a ‘low-calorie vitamin bomb’. Especially since Halloween became the talk of the town, the pumpkin has found its way out of obscurity and into the limelight of popularity. And we're not just talking about the secretly flickering lanterns here, but also delicious soups and crunchy diced vegetables.

But did you know that the pumpkin plant has more to offer than just its flesh? Yes, the seeds, the oil and even the leaves are edible and packed with good nutrients. That gives us more than enough reasons to take a closer look at this colourful fellow.

Let's take a look at the history of the pumpkin. In Central Europe, it may be a relative newcomer to the party of popular vegetables, but globally it has an impressive pedigree. It has been cultivated in Central and South America for around 5,000 years and found its way to Europe and Asia through colonisation. Just imagine, Christopher Columbus himself is said to have discovered the pumpkin in Cuba in 1492!

Today, edible pumpkins can be found almost everywhere in the world, with particularly favourable conditions in the warm, humid climate zones of the higher tropical regions of Central and South America. In Central Europe, they usually reach their splendour in late summer, ready for harvest in early autumn.

However, growing pumpkins is not without its challenges. Particularly in western industrialised nations, where demand increases enormously in autumn, cultivation is often carried out on a large scale.

This can lead to problems such as soil leaching and drought. But don't worry, there are solutions! Humic acids, for example, can help to improve the water holding capacity of the soil and reduce the need for irrigation and fertilisers.

Interestingly, studies such as the one from Iran show that humic acids can also increase the resistance of pumpkins to environmental stressors such as heavy metals. This not only leads to better root development, but also to generally improved plant growth.

So, whether you're a pumpkin lover or just curious about this versatile vegetable, there's always something new to learn and discover. Let's celebrate this autumn season by appreciating the diversity and benefits of this amazing plant!

Pumpkin cultivation made easy!

If you've ever wondered how to grow the perfect pumpkins, let me tell you: It all starts with the soil! A nutrient-rich soil, ideally amended with humic acid-based soil conditioners (e.g. Liqhumus) is your best friend for growing pumpkins. Whether you want to grow winter pumpkins for your next Thanksgiving dinner or simply as autumnal decoration, with the right soil they will grow almost by themselves. And don't worry, even if your garden is more like a modest-sized one, pumpkins aren't as space-consuming as you might think. You may harvest fewer and smaller fruits, but they will still be rich in nutrients and flavour.

Growing pumpkins: simple, but demanding

Although pumpkins are relatively frugal, they do have some important needs. In addition to a continuous supply of water, a nutrient-rich soil is essential. Another decisive factor for the success of your harvest is the soil temperature - always keep it above 12 degrees Celsius, e.g. in a greenhouse.

Grow it yourself or buy it?

For those of you who prefer the organic way: growing your own pumpkins allows you to avoid possible residues of pesticides and fertilisers. Even in small spaces, humic acids can work wonders and lead to healthier and more abundant plants and fruit. If you don't have the space, it's definitely worth visiting your local organic farmer. You will find many traditional pumpkin varieties that you miss in conventional stores. And the best thing? Organic pumpkins are often not that far off the conventional ones in terms of price.
