The gardening year is drawing to a close, temperatures are dropping and gardeners are gradually winterizing their gardens. It's time to remember to provide your lawn with nutrients one last time so it's ready for the winter cold and snow cover. Fall fertilization is the most important fertilization

A lawn that received adequate nutrients throughout the year could successfully withstand heat, drought, pathogens and mechanical stress such as children playing. The grasses had rapid and vigorous root growth and have developed a hardy scar. Overall, the area is largely free of moss, weeds and extraneous grasses. To ensure that this remains the case and that the lawn survives the winter well, fertilizer can be applied once again in the fall.

Autumn places special demands on fertilization

It is important that the fertilization is aligned with the changed nutrient conditions of the lawn. No or only a little nitrogen should be given at the end of the growing season. Too much growth in the fall will otherwise result in soft cells that are susceptible to pests and diseases. Dead stalks that die and weep will then cause increased aeration problems the next spring. Cell stability is the key to effectively counter fungal diseases and frost. Potassium and micronutrients help here. Already in summer, potassium protected the lawn from heat stress. In winter, potassium and microelements strengthen the leaves against cold and support the decreased metabolism.

The right fertilizer at the right time

Fertilize the lawn before the frost at the end of September or in October. When temperatures are around freezing, the lawn stops growing and slowly retreats. Consistently remove fallen leaves from the lawn surface so that the waning daylight can be fully utilized and no damage is done to the turf. Then it is again worthwhile to give humic substances as granules and in liquid form mixed with micronutrients and iron as a basis for a good start into spring. When the soil then freezes, the biological conversion processes in the soil also end and nutrients are preserved packed in humic acid. Only at soil temperatures of 5°C and above does soil life begin to work again and nutrients are released. From 10°C your lawn also starts to push again.
