The cation exchange capacity (C.E.C.) is a measure of the exchangeable cations and thus the number of negative binding sites of cation exchangers in the soil. It does not only depend on the chemical composition of the soil, but also on the mechanical nature, since the effective surface area is related to the size of the colloids. The C.E.C. is an important characteristic value of the soil.
