The carboxyl group is the functional group (–COOH) of carboxylic acids. The term formally derives from the combination of the two elements contained in this group (carbonyl and hydroxyl group). The carboxyl carbon atom carries a double-bound oxygen atom and a single-bound hydroxyl group.
