The humification index indicates the ratio between the humified and the non-humified portion of an organic substance. The higher the index of humic acid in the transformed portion, the higher the index is. The index can be determined by a chemical test. In many countries, there is a Humification Act that regulates the sale of various organic substances (such as compost or sewage sludge) based on the Humification Index.
