A cation is a positively charged ion, e.g. potassium (K+). Since positively charged ions migrate to the negatively charged cathode during electrolysis, they are called cations. Cations are formed from atoms or molecules when electrons are released or hydrogen ions (protons) are absorbed. Salts always consist of cations and anions.
